This is a video recording downloaded from a SmartWitness SVC100GPS Event Data Recorder. The clip starts at 12:27:51 on the 4th October 2010 during a run up the northbound bank of the M5 approaching Junction 17 (Cribbs Causeway, BRISTOL, UK) in ideal weather conditions.

The truck in the slow lane ahead is running up behind a slower moving car and caravan, the driver indicates too late, and then pulls across into my lane. The SmartWitness EDR uses a 170 degree extreme wide-angle lens that causes great distortion to perceived distances and speeds. If you compare the shadows of the passing vehicles to the length of the lane marking lines, you can work out that my vehicle was approximately two car lengths behind the truck's trailer when the truck started to change lanes. After checking my mirrors and realising that I couldn't change lanes myself because of overtaking vehicles, I had already started to pass the truck's trailer, and had to take immediate evasive braking action to avoid being crushed between the truck's trailer and the SUV that is overtaking me (12:28:07).

The car that passes me at 12:28:24 makes an undertaking manoeuvre that is illegal in the UK, and passes several cars at speed in the middle lane. After being passed (12:28:32), the second car ahead also pulls back into the middle lane to undertake.

Note that the indicated (Speedometer) speed of my vehicle is 4 MPH greater than the GPS (true) speed shown in the video.

With the exception of when you have been stopped immediately behind a vehicle in a traffic queue, the poor resolution of the video prevents you from reading vehicle number plates.

I have now uploaded the Software view version of this video.
