I've been reading more about vintage style and have read in more than one place that it was quite fashionable in the 40's (and 30's?) to leave the "moons" of your nails unpainted. I thought the final look was nice but was afraid that it was a mess waiting to happen in my unpracticed hands.
So here is another "how I did it" video.

Of course, there's probably more than one way to do this but this worked out well for me, especially for a first time.

  • I think they did this in the 50's and 60's too.

  • @turtlefromthenorth - Really? I hadn't seen/heard that. But my sister says she remembers my mom doing hers like this and that would have been in the 70's.

  • I finally put some pictures up on my flikr page of my ( albeit untidy ) attempts at this! Thank you again! :))

  • Good idea to use the brush from an art store! Thanks for the tips.

  • Hi, the result is beautiful! I have a quicker and more accurate tip for you. you can stick those adhesive circles used to repair the holes of the sheets of paper for the copybook with rings ( I'm sorry I'm Italian and I don't know their English name, I hope you understand) on your lunula and then you apply the red polish on the rest of your nail. You have to wait for the polish to dry and then you pull off the circles. It's very easy! Bye!

  • I remember it from the 50's. It was often done with clear pink polish.

Yours looks really nice in this light red and suits your nails.

PlasmaSpeedo (Youtube) has shown a really neat way to get a smooth half moon.

  • your nails are lovely!

  • Very nice, will you make a new hair video soon? Please

  • my grandma used to tell me all about this. very cute!

  • Great idea!
