Holland consists of two provinces in the country of the Netherlands: Noord [North] Holland and Zuid [South] Holland. Since most of the immigrants to North America came from these two provinces, the nation the Netherlands took on the nickname of "Holland"

Thank you for your explanation. Here in Portugal the country is more commonly known as 'Holanda' than 'Países Baixos', although both expressions are used.

Now here's a question: Can Portuguese people understand Brasilian people completely, or are the dialects sufficiently different that there are gaps?

Not completely, but I tell you one thing: Brasilian Portuguese is much more understandable in Portugal than European Portuguese is in Brasil.

Since late 70's that Portuguese prime time TV is soaked by Brasilian soap operas, before that Brasilian music is oftenly listened in Portugal, while Brasilians know little about today's Portuguese culture.

There's a Portuguese Language Orthographic Agreement (see wikipedia) which is very controversial, only a few media use it.
