Engine no 16, 'Little Engine 1'

The inspiration for this engine was a beautiful model of a Table Steam Engine with a pitchfork construction to conduct the power piston rod.

Because I prefer Stirling engines it has been turned into something quite different, of course. The pitchfork construction is used here for the displacer rod and the power cylinder is made to oscillate. To increase the efficiency the displacer cylinder is heated at the top by a copper head heated by a tea-warmer.
The advantage is that the difference in temperature between the hot and the cold part is more favourable.
The little engine runs smoothly if the cranks are at an angle of between 20° and 90° and is also capable of driving something.
Viewed as a piece of kinetic art, the essential elements are the pitchfork construction and the oscillating power piston.
Much attention has been paid to constructing an elegant small model. Hence the name 'Little Engine'.

Voor dit ontwerp is de inspiratiebron geweest: een prachtig model van een Table Steam Engine met een gaffelconstructie voor de geleiding van de arbeidszuiger stang.
Omdat mijn voorkeur uitgaat naar Stirling motoren is het natuurlijk ook weer iets anders geworden.
De gaffelconstructie wordt hier gebruikt voor de verdringerstang en de arbeidscilinder is oscillerend gemaakt.
Om het rendement wat te vergroten wordt hier de verdringercilinder aan de bovenkant verwarmd door een roodkoperen kapje dat verwarmd wordt door een waxinelichtje.
Het voordeel hiervan is dat het temperatuursverschil tussen het warme en koude gedeelte het gunstigst is.
Het machientje loopt probleemloos als de krukwangen tussen de 20° en 90 ° t.o.v. elkaar verschillen en het is tevens instaat iets aan te drijven.Deze Stirling motor moet gezien worden als ' kinetische kunst' waarin in dit geval de beweging van de gaffelconstructie en de oscillerende arbeidscilinder centraal staat.
Aan de vormgeving is veel aandacht besteed om een sierlijk ogend modelletje te maken.
Vandaar de naam " Little Engine"
