Jesse Saint grew up without ever having the chance to know his grandfather, Nate Saint, who was speared by the Waodani in 1956 in the Amazon basin of Ecuador. When Jesse moves with the rest of his family to live with the now peaceful Waodani, he forms a remarkable bond with an old warrior named Mincaye. As Mincaye teaches Jesse the ways of the jungle, Jesse begins to call him "Meme", which means "grandfather". Then he learns that Mincaye was one of the warriors who speared his grandfather, Nate. This remarkable true story follows Jesse Saint as he discovers the grandfathers he never knew, one dead at the hand of the other, and finds that both can show him how he wants to live.
