@skyangel1965 I think you had it in three words - "this dark film." You're right that American audiences were not prepared - but it's the whole thing: Dennis potter's brilliant and brutal vision. The casting, the timing of the release, or any other factors, were mere details. I think Steve Martin does make the part work; the casting is excellent across the board, it's a great film. The audience just wasn't ready for it.

This one of the howlin' worst examples of box office miscasting. No one was prepared to see Steve Martin be a meanie. That, and the fact this dark film was released just before Christmas - Christmas, if you can believe it - and it's no wonder it bombed. Now imagine the original - Bob Hoskins - in the part. Hoskins is an actor no one likes at first , but who grows on you. He would have made the part work.

Bueno amigo. Gracias/ This movie was a delicious cocktail which appealed to only those with excquisite tastes. This dance scene, and that of Walkens were classic.

Agreed! This is a totally underrated and wonderful film - start to finish. This scene - done by Vernal Bagneris is incredible on so many levels - pure joy to watch.
