Babe Russin one of the most underrated tenor men-period, check out his solo on 1930's I Have To Have You with the Louisiana Rhythm Kings

Sweet nugget this!!! Thanks for panning this one out of the stream, pardner. A nice warm easy groove on this one. Carter's scoring for the saxes is very much in evidence, and the 2 reed section sidemen he has playing those dots along with him have their own credentials as total reading and improvising musicians. This record is a Who's Who of what would become Mainstream Jazz later on!

Oh you know it, JC. ;)
In addition to Papa Jo, the real treasure of this session (I have all 4 cuts on 78 & 3 posted thus far) for me is the presence of the vastly underrated Herschel Evans - a real moanin' swinger who never got enough room to stretch out w/Basie, IMO.

Can you imagine how big Herschel would have been in the pantheon of Jazz players had he not died so young? He was one of the people I was referring to on this recording.

Herschel, Chu Berry, Charlie Christian & Jimmy Blanton - imagine how the landscape of jazz would've looked had they all lived well past 1942.
Man, I hear ya. ;)
