In this video, Lowe's home improvement expert, Mike Kraft, demonstrates how to attach a decorative metal fence gate. To find the previous decorative metal fencing installation videos and the printable instructions for this video, visit http://www.Lowes.com/Videos

First, you need to decide which way you want your gate to swing. If you are installing your fence around a swimming pool, the gate must swing away from the pool. Once you decide on the swinging direction, you can set the hinges. You want the top rail of the gate to be level with the top rail of your fence panels. Set your hinges near the rails to best distribute the weight of the gate. Start by placing the top hinge against the gate post. Secure with screws. Do the same with the bottom hinge, making sure both hinges are in line. Now set the gate in position, using blocks to keep the gate in place. Attach the gate to the hinges with screws.

Once the gate swings freely, you are ready to attach the latch. If your fence is around a pool, use a latch approved for swimming pools. Set the latch at a height that is comfortable for you, and then drill pilot holes. Secure with screws. Hold the latch on the gate post so that it lines up with the arm, drill pilot holes and then attach with screws.

Now you can adjust the tension of the self closing hinges. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your particular hinges. Also, make sure you adjust both hinges evenly.

For maintenance for your decorative metal fence will usually just need an occasional wash with a hose. For heavier dirt and debris though, use a cloth towel and cleaning solution.
