I loved Baltimore and really can't wait to go again. The aquarium was amazing and had a great variety of sea animals to look at, not to mention a dolphin show.
My girls and I have watched 'Master and Commander' about 100 times (skipping some parts for the kids) so we've gained a pretty good knowledge of those kinds of ships. I'm the kind of mom that turns everything into a lesson so we all learn a great deal about whatever we watch. The US Constellation really brought the movie to life as we toured the captain's quarters, viewed the great cannons, and the kids even got to take turns in a hammock.
It was also great going aboard the USS Torsk, I've never been on a submarine before but it's an ocean vessel therefore it must be studied :D We borrowed a lot of books from the library when we came home from our trip and turned our living room into a kind of pretend submersible. I even made knobs and gauges so I could yell to the kids, '10 degree angle on the down planes, DIVE DIVE DIVE!!', lol-even better, they knew exactly what to do :D
Most of the decorations on the ocean cake were done with various sized round tips. I got out one of our many ocean books to help me get the details correct. I was using some Viva towels that weren't very smooth, hence the bumpiness of the cake. I also didn't want to put any kind of border around the bottoms so I used a round tip, kind of filled it in, then used a paint brush to give it a little texture.
The beach cake was a lot of fun to do, most of the details again were done with round tips.
For the 'cup' cakes I used 2 regular cupcakes, put them into the cup, and filled in the top with buttercream.
Mo Willems-if you read this, know that we love your books! That pigeon is just too funny! My daughter got to decorate that cake because she read 50 books (lots of Boynton books, love her too). It was a challenge I gave to her older sister too when she knew how to read well enough to read a kids book all by herself. 'Read 10 books and you get a lollipop, 20 books and you get a new toy, 50 books and you get to decorate your own cake.' My 7 yr. old now reads chapter books, she just loves to read and is pretty much unstoppable :D
And that last cake, I was the assistant, my daughter was the head decorator :D I did maybe a total of 10% of the work that went into baking and decorating, she did the rest!
