George Seurat's masterpiece A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte comes to life and answers the question, what's missing from the painting? This Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine gives an in-depth look into the mind of an artist searching for something unique and how that search affects the people around him.
Mounted those amazing marble stairs to the Impressionist Gallery and usually the etheral Rainy Afternoon, Paris greets you...that veil on the woman and the rain on the coblestones...right now, due to construction, Seurat greets you as you ascend the last few steps...the Art Institute in Chicago and there it is. It is so overwhelming and breathtaking and are there enough adjectives that do it justice and Sondheim just captures it. Dots of color and shadow and light and composition and harmony.
