The average American child spends over 40 hours per week consuming media, the equivalent of a full-time job. This means that by the time children born today turn 30, they will have spent an entire decade of their lives in front of some type of screen. Remote Control, based on the findings of the Kaiser Family Foundation's landmark study Generation M: Media in the Lives of 8 to 18-year-olds, examines the implications of this unprecedented level of exposure. Putting a human face on the report's statistical findings, filmmaker Bob McKinnon explores the media habits of two families, supplementing their powerful personal insights with testimony from media experts, educators, and policymakers. Remote Control offers a fascinating look at the centrality of media in our lives, revealing far-reaching effects that we are only beginning to understand, and suggesting ways we might begin to help our children live a life instead of watching one.

  • Yea I'm amazed when you drive around at night all the flickering windows. I stopped watching traditional TV programming about a year ago. Now when I come back to it, it's so dumb and just full of propoganda. I guess it's easy to see why everything is going to hell. Why people aren't informed on the real issues anymore.

  • Tell-lie-vision. . . The hypnotist in the corner of the room. This beast has warped many a mind and still continues to do so with the defense of parents who have been warped by the same beast. Or should it be also called the Tell-me-vison? Tell me what to like, eat, and wear. tell be what beauty is...

  • this kids= no future

  • Nicely done, man. I agree, and it's not just America its seeped everywhere., including here.

  • Get the kids some bikes or some tools to be creative with.

  • The thing is that you can say this about anything. What if a child reads all the time? Do you monitor what they read? Do you have to control how they interpret information? Can't people just experience something just for "fun/entertainment?" And what is quality programming? Who's standards are we trying to make everyone live by? Is it television that is warping minds or are tv show makers just responding to viewers.

  • I live in Germany and it's strange that even though i have around 30 chanels i can switch on the tv and find nothing but germanys next topmodel ,superstar, idiot whatever....

So it seems tobe the vast majority of people who want to watch that crap. And those same peolple who like to see a casting with extremely anorexic or obesed people with an iq less then a carrot think i'm childish when i watch simpsons one of the few shows on tv that quite often has a funny political statement to it.......

  • this is sick !

  • I haven't watched any television for over 8 years and whenever I go to a place that has a tv on it gives me a headache.

  • If more people practiced moderation and actually tried balancing out their lives, such excesses wouldn't be such a problem. I agree that most of what's on television is garbage but some of it is fairly watchable, educational and even practical. Point being, the people are to blame here, not the tools. It seems that whenever people start abusing or overusing tools, products, foods, drugs, etc., the people are portrayed as "victims" but the truth of the matter is, they brought it on themselves.

  • My son doesn't like to get to class on time becasue they are watching TV while they wait for all of the bus kids to arrive, and not even educational TV!!!!!!!!!!!! This reminds me that I should be angry about this, I forgot because there are so many others battles to deal with, so thanks for making this film, now it is back in the forefront of my mind for a while, we need to see more of this, to enpower and remind us of what is wrong about our lives and this world.
