All that bulky padding will act as a cast and not allow for swelling to dissipate. Next she put a sugar tong splint on you, did you have a Colles fracture or forearm fracture? If you just had a ulnar shaft fracture a simple long arm posterior splint would have saved you from a lot of pain.

The difference between a splint and a cast is the cast is completely circumferential whereas the splint is not. The splint is hard on one side while the othewr area is open which allows for swelling. Another thing is that splints are most often applied to a newly fractured/injured area. Casts are put on once swelling has gone down, usually 4-5 days later. One thing I noticed on the splint you were put in was the incrdible bulk of padding applied prior to the actual splint.
i feel so bad for the guy, i had the same pain before, i was riding my bike, fell of doing a front flip and cutting open my entire right arm, i couldn't use it or do anything with it
