A writer, editor, lecturer and activist, Steinem has devoted her life to fighting for justice and equality. She co-founded Ms. magazine and Ms. Foundation for Women, and helped to found New York magazine. Born March 24, 1934 in Toledo, Ohio, she lives in New York City, and is currently at work on Road to the Heart: America As if Everyone Mattered, a book about her more than 30 years on the road as a feminist organizer.

The Powerhouse Speaker series raises awareness of women's contributions to society by featuring influential women across academic disciplines and professions who are role models and pacesettes for women. Last year's inaugural series featured architectural theorist Ila Berman, NASA atmospheric scientist Robbie Hood, hurricane specialist Michelle Mainelli, and composer Bernice Johnson Reagon.

The Newcomb College Institute provides academic and co-curricular programs to enhance the education of undergraduate women at Tulane University. Established in July 2006, the Institute oversees Newcomb Student Programs, the Newcomb College Center for Research on Women and the Newcomb Alumnae Office.

  • It's so odd that feminists have such a dour, angry, humour depiction in the media. Take a look here at the wonderful, funny, insightful Gloria Steinem - as relevant as ever. And I say this as a woman in my twenties.

  • I totally agree. She is very optimistic and a truly relevant activist, dare I say the greatest feminist of our generation.

  • My sister and I watched this video-lecture TODAY and we were really moved and touched by her ideas and easy way to transmit them....

We are sure she is not only illumitaing her own generation but also generations to come...

It was such an honor for us to listen to her. Her wise words were beyond any expectations and will be greatly remembered and used to do what she was advicing us to do: "whatever transformation changes you are making in your life.. it is IMPORTANT"....".

  • Absolutely. That depiction in the media is intended to keep us in our places. It tells us, "Don't be a feminist, or you'll be unpleasant and no one will like you!" They couldn't be more wrong.

  • Good job Gloria

  • It's so great to stand on the shoulders of great women like her.

  • im doing her for my book project and are making a hyper cam 5 minute movie thing about her

  • Gloria Steinem taught me the importance of owning you rage, of accepting the validity of it where it comes from pain and how to use it constructively for a better future. Thanks for posting this!

    Peace, Valkyrie.

  • I just adore her.

  • PLEASE COME BACK!

  • Gloria Steinem is a hero for me.
