Prokofiev / Boris Karloff, Late 1940s: Peter and the Wolf / Петя и волк (Complete)

Boris Karloff (1887-1969) narrates in this 1940s-era recording of Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf," Op. 67. The Vienna State Opera Orchestra is conducted by Mario Rossi. Issued on the Vanguard label, serial number VSD 2010. (I am not sure where the Tiblisi Symphony Orchestra- at right, came from.) This studio recording appeared originally as a 78 rpm single from Mercury's "Childcraft" label.

I played this for my niece and nephews, ages 5 to 10. saying to them "Close your eyes and listen, can you see them?"

They were totally enthralled. The youngest clapping his hand "I see dem Uncle Twace, I see dem!"

How sad, the world of imagination is disappearing replaced by computer games and TV.

Fantastic hearing this again. My Great Aunt played it to us (on her horn Gramaphone - 78rpm) when we were little, and the idea was to get to sleep before the Wolf came!!. Good to hear it & thanks for posting.

Having been spoiled by a wonderful German version Boehm/Boehm/Wiener Philharmoniker ... this is by far my most favorite English rendition ;o)

Ah i wish i had the book with me while listening to this. nothing quite comes so close to desensitizing perfection!

all i need after stressful day is to pop this on and engulf myself in nostalgic memories!
