Rose Valland was quite possibly the greatest heroine of World War II. She worked in the Jeu de Paume museum in Paris under the Nazis, secretly documenting where they were sending art stolen from Jewish collections. Her story is largely unknown, but her courageous work is the epitome of heroism and patriotism.

The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History. In what is perhaps the last major story of World War II that hasnt yet been told, a little-known Allied division was given the mission to find and protect European art treasures looted by Hitler and the Nazis. The stolen art included works by Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Van Eyck, and Vermeer. In a race against time, each man working on his own, the Monuments Men built their own treasure maps from scraps and hints. These unlikely heroes, mostly middle-aged family men, went from quiet lives into the epicenter of war, risking and some losing their lives. Included in this group of men was a woman who courageously worked to preserve the cultural heritage of France under the threat of death by the Nazis. Like other members of the Greatest Generation, the Monuments Men embody the heroic spirit that enabled the best of humanity to defeat the worst. This is their story.

  • actually every russia/ukrainian female sniper is way greater heroine than this rose valland. if she would find all the russian treasures stolen by germans during ww2 (which dominate among all the other cultural losses) then she would some kind of heroine.

  • When remembering these magnificent heroines it is invidious to call this one or that one "the greatest". They were magnificent, whatever they did. Just to enlist for such terrifying duties, alone, makes each a heroine before even commencing such a career. We who admire them,,,,are not worthy of "deciding" who would be "the best.".

  • i went to paint a commission about patriotism and war heroes, it has an eagle in it. i realized there are male and female eagles. so, for the hero faces in the clouds i found this, Rose Valland and art. Thankyou so much.

  • The Story of Rose Valland of one of dedication and courage in the face of terror. I truly believe that her story would make a fantastic full feature film!
