Feeling abandoned, ancient Chinese warriors were sent to the borderlines for decades or for their whole lives, separated from their wives, lovers and families forever. The emotion was portrayed by the famous Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai in his poem of the same title Borders, Mountains, and the Moon from the Han Dynasty folksong collection "Yue-Fu" (樂府). In 1931 Xu Lisun combined the poetry with the notation recorded for the qin (ancient Chinese zither) score to create this famous song.
