The "mess" is massive amounts of loans made to people who had no hope to pay them back.. and the reselling of these loans and their securitization and subsequent infection of the entire money system.. fueled by Left wing social policy, an out of control Fed, an incompetent GOP, and dishonest loaners and loanees (is that a word?)

Profit margin which you love to cite is the amount of profit after all salaries and expenses are paid. What it doesn't reflect is that no one in any agency overseeing any public option is going to be making $124 million a year like the CEOs of some of these insurance companies. Profits are what go to shareholders...not this stuff.

By saying it again I reiterated the point that they are not the problem. Socializing it will make a huge problem. If you want lower rates then pass Tort reform. Quit giving illegal and legal immigrants free health care. Quit letting people with free health care eat what ever the hell they want. Let the smokers and fat people pay their share. Right now government regulations do not allow insurance to bill them beyond 10 percent from the healthy counterparts.
