Canon T2i display problem

UPDATE 9/25/2011: FOUND out that the "Control over HDMI" causes this bug (with my other specific options). If I disable this option, this bug doesn't happen. Canon should PAY me to have discovered this!!

UPDATE 4/4/2011: Canon Canada acknowledge the problem and confirm that their camera does the same. They are contacting Canon USA for help.
After sending my T2i camera to Canon Canada three (3) times, they are unable to repair this problem. So I'm releasing this video to the public to get answers and hopefully be able to fix this issue.

The LCD screen randomly decides to turn ON or stay OFF, when I turn the camera ON.

Please note that you can clearly see (at one point) that the C.Fn-11 is set to [Display on] "When the power switch is turned on, the shooting settings will be displayed" (pg.196 of the Instruction Manual)



For those that will mention that I'm shooting under a fluorescent light... This happens even when I'm under incandescent light, broad daylight or in total darkness.

Same thing is happening to me. I have multiple batteries, multiple cards, it happens every time i turn on the camera. I have to press the display button to get anything to show up on the screen.

The more we do it, the more it will give them a clue and hopefully they will wake up and fix this firmware bug!

I'm going to call canon and tell them. I bet the unformatted card triggers a "Fucntion" for power saving or LCD auto shutoff and makes it permanent. Think of a SDHC card as a floppy start-up disk. Good luck.

switch batteries. You could have a short that is fu the lcd. I have had batteries just start going bad and I replaced them. Problem solved. Did you drop the battery?

@glennwih Nope, I have 2 OEM Canon batteries and Canon CPS also used their own battery.

Yes had the same issue only occured when I changed the setting for HDMI control so have set it back off no problem now prob need a firmware update from canon

that didn't help for me, control over hdmi was off and changing it didn't solve the problem. The problem started happening roughly around the same time I bought an eye-fi sd card, but I'm not sure it has anything to do with it

Fantastic information regarding the "Control Over HDMI" menu setting. This seems to help my T2i screen on power-up. Not 100% consistent.. but definitely better!

@task514 I called canon. I don't know if it was Canada or US; sounded American. He 100% agreed with me, it's the memory card. I returned the card and will stick with ADATA 16gb. It's the best for my Canon and the cheapest to boot.

Another note is that I noticed a 1 to 1 problem in seconds. I left the new formatted on my computer SDHC Patriot 16gb card in my canon for 30 seconds replicating the problem. The problem lasted exactly the same time as I left the card in. Weird? Then, I put an old 4gb card in and it worked perfectly. It's not the batteries it's the unformatted sdhc card. Get a sdhc card from another canon t2i owner or go to Fry's Electronics and I bet it will work. TURN OFF all functions that save power/LCD.

CONT) I have never had a prob with ADATA cards. Although, one fried because I deleted more than 20 pics/videos too fast. Always only delete a few and then turn the camera off etc. I was able to replicate the problem and solve the problem so I think I am right. Use an older card and try it. Also, leave your battery out for a while not 10 seconds.

@task514 Well, I said it was an Unformatted Card. Regardless of manufacturer and specs, I think it is the blank status that screws up the start-up process. My new SDHC card works in my computer and I formatted it and put MISC & DSCM folders off of a working 4gb card but it wouldn't work.

@glennwih I have a high quality Panasonic Gold Serie SDHC card, never flashed anything other than official Canon firmwares. Same damn error! IT'S NOT THE SD CARD!!

Just got off the phone with Canon Canada minutes ago... There is no solution to the problem! They confirmed their camera has the same PROBLEM!!

IT'S the DAMN SDHC card! I put in Magic lantern. No problems. I bought a Patriot 16gb sdhc card. I put it in to format in the camera. Bam! The same problem as you. I turned off in ML and the Function menu in the t2i any auto shut off features etc. Then, I put the already formatted sdhc cards and the problem went away. Conclusion: When you put an un-formatted sdhc card in your camera it screws it up. Format x2, 1st on your computer in FAT32 then low density in the t2i. Very frustrating.

Re-install a different older firmware. Your install may not have gone right 1.0.09

@glennwih The problem is that the LCD doesn't even turn ON in the first place. Forget about the sensor, this happens even if I disable the proximity sensor!

There is no SD card and no lens on purpose to eliminated the factor that it might be a SD card or bad lens.

Nonetheless, this happens even with an SD card and a lens.

It's in your settings. The sensor shuts off automatically. See the manual or look on google.

I'm stumped. If Canon didn't fix it I imagine it is a hardware malfunction in the proximity sensor and not software... Best I can say. How did they justify returning it to you? Is it outside of warranty?

You can clearly see that C.FnIV-11 is set to 0:Display on @1:30
