If it works and sounds good then it's fine by me - maybe it's easier for him this way.

All the great guitarist have their little cheats and tricks - often they just grab as much of a chord as is called for in the situation - sometimes just two strings - to make it easier to play comes next or give it a special effect or atmosphere.
