How to root your Droid Charge even after the updates from www.KDtech.org and @kraisydave. Warning:you may brick your phone. Backup first! Do at your own risk!

Completed on a Mac Air running Windows 7 64 bit
Plug phone into computer once before beginning to download the drivers.
Download the .tar file and Odin file from XDA before beginning.
The old xda forum thread has dropped off due to time. So I have now added updated links directly to the downloads needed. They are slow because they are free. Let me know if you have trouble and I will try my best to help. Thanks!

Or the .tar from http://www.multiupload.com/JWDLBJO4B2

New Odin link: http://megaupload.com/?d=M6CO8E1K

1. Open ODIN.

2. Put the phone into download mode. Do this by powering off your phone, pulling out the battery, and then holding volume down while connecting it to your pc. A giant yellow triangle should be on the phone's screen and it should say 'Downloading...' ODIN should say 'Added!!' and one of the boxes will be yellow and say '0:[COM#]'

3. Click the button labeled 'PDA' and locate the file you are wanting to flash. For emphasis: YOU MUST USE THE PDA BUTTON!

4. Click start. Do not disconnect the phone while it is flashing, it can cause some serious damage.

5. Wait.

6. When finished, unplug the phone, put the battery back in and power up the phone.

Every time I've flashed this, the phone booted straight into recovery. Just select reboot (press home) and it boots up normally. It should probably be recommended to wipe data and cache afterwards, but I didn't and all of my data stayed in tact.

Multiple people have reported that this works. Use at your own risk. I am not responsible for anything that happens to your phone if this doesn't work.

Thanks to imnuts for the HOW-TO thread on creating ODIN builds.

  • i am having trouble finding the .tar file think you could hook me up?

  • @Jay72686 Yes, jump over to my latest video on rooting while keeping data on my channel. All links there are working and the method is current allowing you to keep all updates and app data. Sorry, cannot post links in this messaging.

  • Any idea where to get the Oden and .tar files now that MegaUpload is in federal custody?

  • @BluesStringer1955 Jump over to my other newest rooting video and all the files are there that you will need. Follow the link to the forum which is continually updated to keep the links current.

  • Odin link is not working

  • @Ichig06 Yep, FBI took it down with your tax money.

  • @jewunit1025 Sorry...18 hour work day yesterday. It is likely that the version of Odin u are using is the prob. Try other versions and flash again. Or the original .tar file download corrupted so get a new fresh copy and repeat the process. Have you looked at my other updated rooting vid? This version is fine if you plan to move on to ROMs, but otherwise it is dated.

  • I performed the process exactly how you did; when booting the phone up after the flash i get stuck on the droid eye screen. I have already tried to take the battery out and back in but still no luck. Any ideas?

  • @daveeeed18 Yes, check out PDAnet. There may be other options out there, but that should get you started. Be careful of additional charges by Verizon. Test the waters first. I have used this software for years on many phones without a problem. Let me know how it works.

  • I want to tether with my charge but its a company phone, is this still possible??
