Part 1 of 3
Every year, Nagasaki's Chinatown celebrates its heritage in a cultural event called the Lantern Festival. Around the city, hundreds of lanterns are lit, many depicting figures from Chinese and Buddhist lore, and cultural performances can be seen on the street or in parks.
This is video of the dragon dance performance in Nagasaki's Central Park. I went with a couple of friends, one of whom is wheelchair bound and has been suffering from other health issues lately. Because it is supposed to bring good luck, one of the event officials brought the dragon to us at the beginning of the performance so she could rub its head.
There is a green dragon manned by people from the community and a red dragon manned (or womanned) by students from a nearby all-girls high school. Both dragons are heavy and require a lot of training.
This is so interesting. I've been to Yokohama's Chinatown.
I like this video. Thanks.
