I know it's been mentioned, but he's playing chess with Death... Not the Devil. The reason I bring it up is that these subtitles aren't the humble effort of somebody on youtube... they're actually on the DVD. So why in the hell couldn't they find someone to translate it who understood the whole point of the film?

It's actually Death, not the Devil.

This is my favourite scene from the movie. I am moved when Block is asking for God to communicate with him and Death replies with "He is silent" and also "I call out to him in the darkness and it appears nobody is there" with Death replying "Perhaps there isn't anyone". This battle of words and emotions is something only mastered by those who can make us feel what the characters are feeling and Bergman is one of those who has perfected this craft. May he R.I.P.

Political attained the death of Eros yet the political aim is the Liberation of Eros.

@catbird007 No, too bad for Arturius, he doesn't. At all. He(Death) says to block he has no secrete to show and no need to know.

@uruseiranma The chess game does not matter anymore. That scene is a symbolic way of saying :"You have no way out". From then on, Death actually disappears, giving Block indeed the extra time he "needed", to save the lives of the only innocents, the couple with the baby, which were to be spared. The others were eventually caught by Death at God's will to be sent to hell (don't know about Block), Refer to the Book of Revelations and its seven Seals, the last part of the Bible.Yes, Bergman.

Its Death, not the devil
I am not sure that Shakespeare could have done better. This level of understanding the spiritual struggles of humanity is unparalleled -- RIP Ingmar.

Right! It's important to remember that the Knight is dealing with Death and not the Devil; if it were indeed the Devil, his apprehensions about God's existence would be lessened.
