"I'll Fly Away" - bluegrass guitar instrumental and lesson. Key of C / Capo 2nd Fret. This is my own arrangement of this classic piece. I welcome questions and critique alike. :)

  • @sharpsound2011 Err . . . thanks for commenting?

  • Flatpicking. It takes a real talent to get some of these scale exercises to sound like the song. My old friend Dorsey Williams who built and played Appalachian dulcimers called this fretboard exercise. I thought about that. I have listened to the best flatpickers. David Greir is really good. Steve Kauffman at times, tries to see how many notes he can cram in there I really love Norman Blake and Tony Rice. It takes gifted hands and ear, musical sense and making it all work.

  • @BRichards (continued) . . . I had only been familiar with the technique for a couple of months, so this arrangement was a much a wrestling with the ins and outs of crosspicking as it was anything else. Thanks again for taking the time to comment.

    Blessings,

  • @BRichards Hey - thanks so much for the comment - I believe you're essentially correct in your thinking about the substitution of eighth for quarter notes - and there's a good chance this arrangement is too "busy". Part of the reason for that (which I don't think I explained) is that the arrangement was also an experiment for me in applying crosspicking technique to an already existing piece - to see how it would "fit." When I posted this video . . .

  • You can literally take any simple song and put 1/8 notes instead of 1/4 notes. It was a really nice picking, but I couldn't really make out the old fashioned gospel tune "I'll Fly Away". You play really well..

  • @MrMunchiemo I suppose it could be. However, most musical pieces, if you can break them up into small "bite-sized" pieces for practice, become a lot less intimidating. If you're interested in playing this style, I would recommend learning (1st) how to flatpick, with strict alternate picking, and (2nd) the basics of crosspicking. One area of skill tends to build on another. If you have any questions, let me know. Thanks for watching!

  • That sounds great. But it looks kind of hard to play.
