This is a movie that is brilliant, beautiful, and wonderfully tragic in it's portrayal of women, friendships, and Mothers & daughters in the late 50's. As a Biracial woman I found it very powerful in it's attempt to address the complexities of racial identity . Adapted from Fannie Hurst's novel it's 1959's Imitation of Life. Starring Lana Turner, Juanita Moore, John Gavin, Sandra Dee, Susan Kohner, Robert Alda, Dan O'Herlihy, and Gospel music star Mahalia Jackson.

  • Sara Jane gets me sooo mad! I could never be ashamed of my mom. I feel like punching her!

  • thank you for posting this movie :]

I'm mostly asian and very little caucasian and I was born in korea and ever since I moved to america, I've been always felt like an outsider because of my race. I recently started high school and i've felt more like an outcast. I've recently became ashamed of who i was and I tried looking more "white". I've started watching this movie and Imitation of Life has helped me accept more of who i am, not what i pretend to be

  • Ive seen this movie many times, I got it for Christmas, The reason why I watch it is ONLY because of STEVE ARCHER !!!

  • @AppleMangoPeachBerry I would KILL to be Asian. You have no idea how lucky you are.

Everyone should be proud of their race! (being white is.. boring.. really...)

  • @7harobed A movie that deals with racism doesn't necessarily make it racist. That's what the hell I was talking about.

  • @harriettewinslow what the hell r u tlaking about? yes its a movie but ut does reflect the thinking of that time which was racist in fact Hollywood treated all non whites in a depreciating and stereotypical way--yes the movie has a motto or lesson but make no mistake racism is at the heart if the story especially the 1934 version the whole reason that Sarah Jane thoughtn like she did was the society was sick deeply engrained in racism --ignorance my dear is NOT bliss

  • @sheriwhispers You are so right sometimes we for get there were Jews and other races that were treated bad also.

  • I love this movie but my least favorite character is Sarah Jane. Shes a ungreatful lil bitch through out the movie then when her mom dies shes all hurt and crying .. Fuck that too late

  • I understand that inadvertedly we are taught that black is something to be ashamed of, not as good as something else, or different and back than it was blatantly taught and institutionalized, HOWEVER,

my mom could storm up to my campus and wave my dirty drowse around and I still wouldn't be ashamed of her (mad definitly); not after the struggle and sacrifice she's done for me. I've never felt ashamed of her no matter what people said. I was too blessed to have one, and I always knew that

  • @3909clancy WAIT ! you called this a racist movie did you not ? an here I thought I miss replied to you lol grow up stop trolling an then just behave yourself educate yourself so you dont sound so ignorant END OF now off with you
