Witnesses to the shooting described the terror and chaos unleashed by the rampage as screaming shoppers, at the popular Westroads Mall in Omaha, dived for cover behind clothing rails and in dressing rooms.
Robert A. Hawkins, a high school drop out who friends described as depressed, armed with a SKS assault rifle, with the box mag removed and the mod for an AK style mag, he made his way to the third floor of the Von Maur department store, pulled out the rifle and opened fire. He hit 13 people in the crowded complex, killing eight and injuring five before turning the gun on himself. The attack occurred where guns were banned.
earlier in the day he was fired from a job at a Bellevue McDonald's restaurant. He was accused of stealing $17 from the restaurant.
Hawkins' previous criminal history includes an arrest Friday in Sarpy County on suspicion of contributing to the delinquency of a child, being a minor in possession of or dispensing alcohol and being a minor in possession of an open alcoholic container.
He was also found guilty in 2005 of disorderly conduct and sentenced to seven days in jail. Also in 2005, he was charged with intent to deliver a controlled substance, but the charge was dismissed by prosecutors. Estranged from his mother, taken in by friends, fresh from breaking up with his girlfriend and just fired from a McDonald's, Hawkins emerged as a troubled youth who wanted attention. He was in foster homes for four years until he became an adult and he showed signs of mental illness.
We are living in a violent world where human life is unsafe not only on the battleground but also in homes, malls, schools and universities.
