Florence Glenda Ballard Chapman (June 30, 1943 -- February 22, 1976) was an American singer and a founding member of the Motown group The Supremes. From 1963 until 1967, Ballard sang on 16 Top 40 hit Supremes' singles, ten of which hit number-one on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1967, Motown CEO Berry Gordy decided to remove Ballard from the Supremes.

After being dropped from the group, Ballard struggled with a solo career in the late 1960s and spent much of the last five years of her life in relative poverty before recieving an insurance settlement with which she began to re-build her life with, purchasing a new house and car.

In 1976, Ballard died of cardiac arrest at the age of thirty-two while making a comeback in the entertainment industry. Her death has been called "one of rock's greatest tragedies".

The character "Effie White" from the 1981 broadway play and 2006 play Dreamgirls is loosely based on Florence Ballard and The Supremes story. Jennifer Hudson won a Golden Globe Award and Academy Award for her portrayal of Effie White in the "Dreamgirls" film. In her Golden Globe acceptance speech, Hudson dedicated her win to Florence Ballard.

  • It isn't healthy notes!!!

  • Cindy Birdsong, though talented, did not do the group the same harmonic justice that Flo did because she was not naturally a contralto. Flo had superlative range, but her tessitura is definitely in the low dramatic contralto range. Cindy was naturally a mezzo-soprano. There harmonies would never be the same without Flo's husky, honking, horn-of-a-voice. The harmonies went to shit. Cindy would've been better off in the Bluebells with Patti.

  • Naturally, her range is incredible. However, I think she was definitely a low contralto, not soprano. She had the range to sing soprano, but her comfort range sits low in the voice, like Phyllis Hyman. Her glory tones were when she dug deep into the depths of true female-tenor lows. That's why the Supremes didn't have the same pitch-perfect, tight harmony after she was fired. They needed Flo to carry those low notes. Cindy Birdsong was more of a mezzo-soprano.

  • get you some help.its nothing to be ashamed of.you are sick.i was fortunate.i didnt lose my family or friends many of us do.i was a funny drunk but after the alcohol wore off it was no longer fun.i heard florence had straighten her life out.good for her! this disease i would sit for hours AND for hours trying to figure it out and i could not.since i could not i decided to beat it.iam proud that my grand kids never saw me drunk.i have met alcoholics as young as 10. get help!
