  • question to all saxaphonists, if thats what you guys are called. im 15, really into jazz music and considering buying a saxophone because i think they look and sound amazing. never played a reed intrument before but im grade 5 at piano if that makes a difference. should i buy one/is it hard to learn? will i be able to get a sound out of it? :S

  • @joshbell95

    every instrument is difficult...

i reccomend you to find a good teacher , it's not easy to learn by yourself , if you want to play ... play!

You're only fifteen so , what's the problem?

Playing piano is absolutely necessary if you want to get deeply into the harmony and is an essential tool to write music.

Every good woodwind / brass player plays the piano , trust me!

If possible buy a decent instrument , it makes a huge difference.

  • at 1.35 you ahve this powerful growling sound. how do you do that? i can do reg growl but have never been able to get that 'scream' so to speak

  • @saxman1343

you can get the growling effect in two ways :

    hum while you're playing

    splitting notes

splitting notes is way more aggressive than humming , I'm planning to do new videos with professional audio and video quality on this topic , so I'll let you know... bye

  • hi,

great video! you are a very talented player...

i'm a student, so i ask you: what is your sax setup (brand/model of your sax, mouthpiece and reeds)? thx and congratulations

  • @gustavotiberio

Thanks for you comment. Tha set up was a 80,XXX mark VI / ponzol M1 110 ( 8 ) / rico orange box reeds 3,5.

The funny thing is that I changed everything last summer ...

now I play a balanced action / otto link florida 7* / rigotti 3 reeds.

You can achieve great altissimo with every set up. It's in the air stream and in your throat.

  • yeh... this is great... i've never seen such great demo of altissimo before...

  • Thank you so much, you are a fantastic teacher and I love your playing, very inspirational. If you're intermediate, I'm a pre-schooler and I've been playing for 13 years off and on!

  • Now here's someone who knows how to play!

  • @fabriziodalisera thanks for the reply... one more question, should i buy an alto or tenor? taking into mind i am a begginer, which is easier to learn? and would you recommend any particular make/model?

  • @joshbell95 The thing about playing a sax is that when you start off its easy to get a good decent sound, but it takes a lot of skill and practice to get a really great sound. not anyone can learn how to play this but if you are gifted with an ear for music and if other instruments com easily to you then go for it but it will take a long time to get to where this guy is

  • @joshbell95 You sound just like me(except I'm 19!).I play the piano too, taught myself for 13 yrs.I guess if u know how to read sheet music, that will help a lot.I've always loved the sound of it,(is it sad that The Simpsons started my love for it?!)and prefer the tenor sound so I'm starting on that. It's not arrived yet tho :( I got a Trevor James, but my future teacher said Jupiter makes are good to start on too.I'd recommend finding a teacher as it seems more techincal instrument to start off on.

  • @atari721 that's exactly what I was gonna say lol

  • @nicherna it was pathetically hard for me. really practicing overtones helps a bit but i got no where until i just started blowing my face off on the fingerings. I eventually got used to them however it is still an inexact art for me and i rarely use it while playing (except to show off sometimes).
