  • You have got to have some more credibility to say something like: "broadcast on TV to over 300 million people". How long were they listening? 30 seconds? I mean, french horn isn't such a popular instrument (I play myself however) to be listened to by one in twenty people of the world population.

Besides, it doesn't sound like a four/five star ratting.

  • Dear Andre. In life one should consider before stating their opinion, to take things in proper context. The facts are that this was a two hour concert performed in Beijing in 1986 by high school students. It was broadcast nationally in China, so the actual number of people viewing probably wasn't exactly 300 million. But really, who gives a shit. The truth of this moment in my personal history ( I'm a trumpet player, so I'm not the soloist in this video) the truth is the credibility.

  • played like a true american...hand stuffed alllll the way up the bell

  • Did you see the Canadian flag in the background?

    He's Canadian, not American.

And it's the mic proximity and hall that are contributing to the muffled sound you're commenting on.

  • Man, Toronto sure is a fan of the 80's hairstyles :) When was this shot?

  • Read the info--it was shot in 1986

  • @zingraff the country Canada is in the continent called America. And I would say all hornists in North America play similarly. They prefer the strong more brass tone of the horn. and I agree with matt who said his hand is way too far up the bell.

  • where can i find the first two movements of this piece? i'd really need to listen to them.

  • to andrevdbc

@ that time in China there were only 2 channels to watch on T.V.

So their is a pretty good chance it was that many.

The day after that concert the tour guide told us that is how many watched.

He was the spokesmen for the goverment@ that time still very communist and run under an iron fist. They based it on how people owed a tv

  • @AnD082292 I'm pretty sure Bassoon is up there as well, and if not definetly should be. It's harder to play than an oboe... and oboe is tough already. but i play f horn so whatever...

  • I agree that it's amazing that he played for nearly 4 minutes straight, only a few moments pause here and there. French horn is listed along with oboe as one of the hardest instruments to play in the Guiness Book of World Records. My daughter, who plays horn, pointed this out to me...a mere flute player. :P

  • like it....i play french horn:)

  • is that a triple horn?

  • and it doesn't help that the related videos include pieces played by stefan dohr, dale clevenger, that Siegfried horn girl, etc., all amazing professionals

  • the tone is not stellar, the accompaniment absolutely sucked, and there were many flaws, BUT props to him for playing for FOUR STRAIGHT MINUTES.

Playing for 1 minute straight is tough with the horn. The mouthpiece is so small that only a few lip muscles can be used when playing. It's a tough piece and, again, 4 straight minutes is very long for a horn player.

I play it in high school, too, and I probably need like a couple months to practice that piece to play it..

  • thank you for this vid
