6010 is fun

fit up is VERY important with open root. some ppl say u should whip w 6010. true when the keyhole starts gettin big but if its goin right u should be able to just cruise right along joint with little manipulation. ull know when its right by the sound it makes

I'm an absolute beginner and am having trouble with horizontal welding. I have the proper amperage setting for the stick but I wind up burning a hole in the back part and splashing and making a mess in the bottom part. It seems that whatever angle I go in at I cant get it right.

get a good fit up and you win 90% of the battle

yeah........ 6010 is hard to control but if u get along ........its pretty cool yeahhhhh ow yea

@alliedskills hot passes done with a 70 series rod are supposed to be hotter than the root
-
@alliedskills when you put your root pass in its suspose to be hot not cold because you will not get the penetration that you need for your root pass, you can run your fill pass a bit colder and when your using 6010 you really have to jam your rod into the puddle freeze for 2 seconds and pull out for 1 . im getting my 3 year journyman and that is the way they teach us to weld for your root
-
the rootpass is done colder just to actually put metal in, the hot pass is second lol to boil the impurities out of your weld ;)

@alliedskills you run the hot pass colder than the root? what the fuck are you talkin about... you run the root 6010 at 70ish amps and the hot pass 7018 like 110 i don't even remember what i used to burn my hot passes at with 7018 im downhill now thats why i posted that shit up there ^ so much more fun
I'm in the boilermakers union and Im having problems with open root overhead. I can't get itto level out on top and when I do usually it's to globby on the first pass and causes my filler passes and cover passes to become uneven and non consistent any tips?

jason23396,
In any welding process, when we start weld, the plate (work) will get hotter, we need to adjust accordingly.
Don't be afraid to change your speed and motion.
good luck

Brandon,
The hot pass (ess) is on the root pass, commonly run colder.
