To respond to the conditions of life is one of the fundamental capacities of the universe, Swimme tells us. To be human means we have a deep capacity to care and act responsibly about the future. As the dynamics of life on the planet change, from the genetically determined to the cultural, our decisions have the power to alter life on the planet. The most responsible decision we can make will be one that maintains the conditions of life and makes the earth blossom for millions of more years. With Cosmologist Brian Swimme. • @philg379 No but more are waking up than ever - maybe we only need about 15% to have a Tipping Point

  • @psusac " Self aware, but not good at noticing ...others?" I suggest you contemplate this comment. You can't be truely self aware if you don't know what is going on with others. Try reading Martin Bubers classic ' I and Thou '. Merry Christmas

  • @philg379 I don't know what "fully conscious" means. I'm an interovert, so I'm pretty self-aware, but I'm not so good at noticing what is going on with others. My Girlfriend is an extrovert. She is EXCELLENT at reading people in groups.

This illustrates that "conscious" is a broad term with a lot of different parts. A person is bound to have strengths and weaknesses in these parts.

I don't think "fully conscious" is a meaningful term.

  • @psusac Hi from Wellington New Zealand. Do you still think that humans, as a species, are fully conscious? I don't, and I think that is a large part of the issue.

  • @iuoboe Please see or at least hear his most recent series. Solidly put together, it builds and takes further these admittedly basic concepts. Remember that what may be old news or trite to one, may be the keys to a new life for another. Swimme grows, like any good scientist, and uses each piece as the foundation for further and deeper understanding in a later piece.

  • The whole series is is full of trite truths and superficial platitudes. Sorry to hear that a major scientist can come up with nothing more profound than this.

  • Great series! Very enjoyable, more and more beautiful words. So much love :)

  • Actually competition is only speculation. It sounds non-mythological, because myth usually means religion, but if you think about it and do some research, there was never any theory/experiment proving(not strengthening) this competition theories, it is pure speculation, and as it is a reaction to christian dogma, it is more a cultural product than an scientific insight.

  • I know what you mean, but remember remember that its just a presentation. all of this has profound implications for action. There are a lot of eco-socially quite mindless rich white kids in the new movements, but we are just starting on a big scale! And if you want, you can be a part of it and influence it all! Dont oppose, optimize!

  • what of coevolution, mutually beneficial relationships and the contentions that more is gained through cooperation than through competitive motivation or conflict. no doubt competition over limited resources meant some species died so others could live, but i think the argument is that based on the outcomes of the system, not consequences for individual species necessarily, it is this point he makes earlier about human inability to know his place that has led to an imbalance in the system
