Cookie Diet Doctor Tells us that Eating Healthy does not equal giving up the pleasures of taste.

While cooking can be intimidating, the focus on food in recent years can be your inspiration, encouraging you to put on that apron and grab a knife and cutting board. It may be one of the best ways for you to take more control of your diet, your weight and, in the process, your most precious asset: your health.

A lot of people think eating healthy means giving up the pleasures of taste and texture. Not so. There are plenty of simple, smart substitutions that you and your dinner guests would be hard-pressed to notice.

One of the most important things to reduce in our diets is saturated fat, says Dr. Sasson Moulavi, M.D., Medical Director for Smart for Life, a multi-million dollar company that makes its own line of high-nutrition foods known as a Cookie Diet. Dr. Sass, as he is known, says you can dramatically cut calories and reduce fat intake in creative ways depending on what youre cooking-up in the kitchen.

When replacing butter, which is high in saturated fat, be sure youre using products with none of the so-called trans fats or saturated fats, cautions Dr. Sass. Fortunately for would-be chefs, these ingredients are clearly marked on product labels.

The weight loss counselors at the Smart for Life Cookie Diet Centers teach their maintenance clients about alternatives to common cooking additives. For spreading, use a vegetable oil-based product, or perhaps even oil itself. Olive oil for dipping can be just as tasty as spreading butter on rolls or bread and its filled with healthy mono-unsaturated fat. In recipes for muffins, breads, and cakes: replace the butter with a mix of one-half applesauce and one-half buttermilk. In cake frosting, replace butter with marshmallow fluff. And this one might seem really off the wall, but try it and see if it doesnt work: in brownies, toss aside the butter and grab some baby prunes! (And dont forget: theres always the added benefit of all that added fiber for regularity.)

When making a meat sauce, you can get away with lean ground turkey, meatless crumbles, or soy-based protein products. For burgers and meatloaf, uses ground beef thats at least 90% fat-free, and feel free to mix the beef with turkey or soy products.

These kinds of healthy substitutions are the concept behind our cookie diet formulas, says Dr. Moulavi. You may not be able to take it to the level of a diet based entirely on cookie-type items, but every step you take is worth the effort.

Dr. Moulavi tells us that whatever you do in the kitchen: HAVE FUN! Cooking for yourself is a great creative outlet. It can be relaxing, an escape and distraction from the stress of every day life. And along with the sense of pride and accomplishment when you serve the finished product, youll also have the knowledge that youre living a healthier lifestyle.
