One of the rescued horses, Mama, and her new Colt, Twist of Fate.

Early in the morning of September 27, 2006, 42 horses in an overcrowded, double-deck tractor-trailer were headed to a slaughter house in Illinois. A horrific accident on Interstate 44 in Franklin County, Missouri left 16 of the animals dead. (The driver, his wife and dog survived the accident.) Fortunately, a team of emergency rescuers and veterinarians led by Earlene Cole, director of the Humane Society of Missouri's Longmeadow Rescue Ranch, were able to rescue 25 horses and one hinny.

Many of the horses required extensive care from the fantastic, professional staff and doctors at four area equine hospitals. All received nearly round-the-clock, loving care from the staff at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch. Unfortunately, two horses have had to be humanely euthanized due to injuries and preexisting conditions.

And now, after four months of recuperation and rehabilitation, many of these remarkable horses are ready for new homes. Some are rideable, some are trainable, some would make good companion horses. All need just the right new family to ensure they will have easy livin' the rest of their lives.

  • this may sound harsh but to be honest i think it was probably better them dying then. rather than travveling for miles in cramped condtions with no hay water or anything then being killed.

  • Only good moron is a dead one.

Always wanted to kill a moron.

Don't allow it in the UK:(

  • im glad that it crashed becuz the r goin to homes.but it breaks my heart that they died.all i can say is why.why would u do this to these animals why?

  • the workers at the slaughter houses everywhere(yes everywhere) act like they like the torture for the beautiful creatures!

  • wow, this makes me really sad for the horses.

and also I do disagree to them being slaughtered, and I find it sick and completely horrible for ANY sick human being to eat a horse, I must admit that although it seems immoral to me it is actually... i cant really find the words but i'm sure u can fill it in. I dont want to give off the wrong message and have people say stuff like

"OMFG you son of a ***** why do you support this!?!?"

I do NOT support it, and im at my character count limit.

  • this is terrible it just makes me so sad... does anyone know what the songs called??

IM SO GLAD I SIGHN THINGS TO MAKE SURE THERE IS NO HORSE SLAUGHTER IN THE uk OR ANYWERE!!!

horse slaughter makes me angry and anyone who wants to eat them should be locked up!!!

    SAVE THE HORSE WEEK!!!!!

  • If you consult the history books, humans first interaction with horses was the hunter and the hunted. We ate horses for thousands of years before we ever tried to use one as a beast of burden. I don't eat horse meat, but I do have a sensible outlook on the industry that is inundated with horses and no where for them to go. Do you have the room for them all or are you expecting everyone else to take them in and feed them for the next twenty years of their lives?

  • Why would you say that? If you really believe that you're dumber then you sound! Don't take it out on these beautiful animals just because you have problems!
