Younger people don't know about Kai Winding. One of the greatest trombonists. His work with JJ Johnson and lots of others. His sound really established the solo trombone sound that Kenton used from the 40s onward. He did a lot of very commercial stuff, but even that was good.

Again I write- the rendition of this classic song by Kai and that All Star back up group is hauntingly beautiful .

@posaunist5 You forgot Slide Hampton, who I drove back to his hotel in Amsterdam after one of those sessions...also brought Frank R. to a legal hashish club in Hilversum, where the sessions were recorded.......hung out with everyone at a party at Eric's house.....there was an LP cut at the same time...can't seem to be able to find the name..oh well, it will surface!

@pindaric I wanted to say, "You're crazy" cuz I followed almost all those cats but you're right. America's premier art form is taking a back seat while the japanese put it on the fore-front. (That statement is not a prejudice one seeing as I'm a big fan of The Seatbelts and the Masaru Uchibori Big Band)

there is also a great cd with him and rosolino, ake persson, urbie green, erik van lier live in holland in the seventies

i met kai in holland app 1981 with curtis fuller. they just had dinner. he was very nice. he also played there with lionel hamptons allstar band and played some beautiful solos. great player. there is a great record from this all-star tour that he did. it's called : the giants of jazz .. there is also sonny stitt playing on it. i think young jazz tromonists would be well advised to listen to kai. in the end he creates beautiful music. an underrated jazz soloist on the trombone.
