I think it is clear that any turbulence related to oil & gas ends hurting the US more than any other Country. The countries that most benefit from instability relating to oil/gas production are those that are the most rogue right now: Iran, Venezuela, and Russia.
The "new" great game should be peace, I think the current American administration understands this.

Why was al Qaeda airlifted into Pakistan if the USA did not want to destabilise Pakistan?
To talk about Afghanistan you must understand the country's strategic position in relation to Oil and Gas reserves in the Caspian region.
The USA wants to cut Irans Gas pipeline to China through Pakistan, also Afghanistan and Pakistan are needed to send pipelines from the Caspian to the Indian Ocean.
