Scottish Accent - Scottish Words and Sentences

In these series of videos, I'm giving out examples of Scottish words and sentences, which is mostly Glaswegian. I do remind people about the different dialects across Scotland, but of course, this will give people a good understanding of sentences, with even common Scottish dialect. This will give people an understanding as to how the words are strung together, and maybe help with some Scottish grammar. I hope that these Scottish words and sentences videos help and are entertaining for you to learn.

I personally felt that too often our accent was wrongly stereotyped through the media, I also feel that even to a certain degree, there are no proper videos that I've seen out there giving people a deeper explanation behind the much of the Scottish words and sentences. This is by no means having a go at others, but I wanted to throw out, what I feel, has been missing. My aim is to give people an understanding as to how we talk, maybe if people come here to Scotland, they won't feel as bad.

I try and give people a slanger version and meaning to how such Scottish words are structured, giving people a better understanding, rather than giving just a word for them to sit and ponder over. A lot of the time, us Scottish people are not understood, I often find I slow down when I speak on video, as well as to foreigners, because I feel sometimes my accent is a tad bit strong, and that I feel I'll come across misunderstood. So I try to give a happy medium, where I speak more proper, but also give a bit of the Glaswegian Scottish dialect.

If people have any questions, then feel free to ask, I hope this is of great help to you and I am very thankful to the comments from my other Scottish Accent videos, so thanks to those who commented and happy to know that I've at least been helpful previously.

  • I'm from America and have been to Edinburgh. I loved it and think it would be fun to live there someday. These videos sorta give a perspective into the language aspect of Scottish culture, so kudos to you for taking time to do this. :)

  • @knightscribe7 Cheers pal :) it's what I aim to do for people, to show the real way we speak, our people and our land :) if I achieve any of that, am happy :) and glad you loved Scotland, Edinburgh is a beautiful city :)

  • thx for sharing this :) ScottMcK9...just came back from Edinburgh...have been interested in Scottish accents since the 1st time I've been there...the rolling "R" attracts me ;)...

  • @frostylunetta Not a problem at all :) hope you enjoyed your time in Scotland of course, and I can some what understand that, I love foreign accents :D

  • I love your accent. And Scotland. Could you tell something about this hypnotizing "R" that Scottish people use? I'm from Poland and even though I've tried milions of times to make this sound while speaking english at the end it's nothing alike :(

On my phonetics classes we're thought proper english so I'm trying to extend my knowledge on my own ;)

  • @marika147 Hi Marika, it's very hard to teach the rolling 'r', the best I can describe to you, it's not over done, but it's like when you go to roll your tongue slightly you hit the tip of your tongue ever so quickly off the top of your gum when you say the 'r', maybe I'll do a video on it at some point to help people like yourself :) i'll definitely get around to that :) and thanks :)

  • @peacefrog1916 lol cheers bud, thing is, I take pride in being British second to Scottish, but being proud of being British for our history, not because of the Union 400 years ago. I think people forget the wee bit that when the Romans marched on our land, we were technically British people, just given different name. My saltire is up next to my American flag, which are my 2 favourites :) and aye, am patriotically Scottish bud.

  • Like yer vids mate just a shame about the Butchers Apron hanging in the background.

  • oh ok

  • @mlepritchett Thanks Chelle, been meaning to get around to getting part 3 done, just haven't done it yet. Might do it later on though.
