After a triumphant voyage of 422 million miles halfway around the sun, cheers of joy were heard at NASA's mission control headquarters Sunday after the Phoenix Mars probe landed succssfully on the surface of Mars. The probe will use a robotc arm to explore the amounts of frozen water that lies under the topsoil, and will also examine if the northern polar region of the planet is suitable for habitation. It took 15 minutes at the speed of light for the first faint radio signal of success to reach the scientists, relayed from Mars Odyssey, the orbiter flying high above the landing site.05/26/08
