Home Training with Karla, my sweet German Shepherd guide dog. We trained together under the guidance of our good friend Janice, guide dog trainer extraordinaire!
No problem, not rude at all. Correct, SDs should be focused on their handler & Maizie was VERY sniffy then. It was the 1st time working her & Karla together; she took advantage of my being immersed in training w/my new guide. She usually does very wel, but I now use a Gentle Leader w/her in grocery stores for optimal control of her head/nose. Even the most well trained SD is still a dog & will act like one now & then. It's up to the handlers to stay on top of it & not let it get out of hand.
Very interesting, just one more question though. Why does Maizie sniff the floor so much, shouldn't she be focused on you and not sniffing everything as she passes by? I don't mean to be rude with any of my questions, I'm just really curious about your doggies. Thanks for your great answers! :)
@therapydogchick Sorry, just seeing your comment now. Karla (guide dog, trained by The Seeing Eye in Morristown NJ), Maizie (the Dachshund) is my Diabetic Alert Dog. Each perform a separate job. It is rare for a person to have 2 Service Dogs at once. I consider myself very blessed to have both of these extraordinary dogs. At some point (when both dogs retire) I would prefer having one dog trained to do both. It can be done, I'm told, so that's the plan eventually.

Karla is a great guide, but just out of curiousity why are you working with two dogs? I thought the dog had to be individually trained?
