How can we make sense of the death of Jesus? If he was really God, why didn't he save himself? Why is it important?

it is madness. Most thinking theologians see the angry God who must have blood payment to calm down is a twisted version of what it means for God to be just.

I am told that God is just.
We are sinful and because he is just, he had to have payment for sin.
As it happens, the wages of sin is DEATH.
But because he loves us, he decided to kill himself as payment.
Am I the only person who can see that this is madness?
