@kjnwfchrcnhr And for the version that is in my opinion,in the highest planes of consciousness, and complete world unto itself, type in LENNY BREAU STELLA BY STARLIGHT...Once you start hearing versions like this, everyone else's seem pale and lame in comparison
-
@kjnwfchrcnhr Type in Barney Kessel Stella by Starlight..And hear the difference
-
@kjnwfchrcnhr I totally agree with justintime, that Metheny is completely out of his element playing chordal melodies. It sounds choppy, lacking fluidity, completely academic, and just plain shit.Pat is an ok player, but the FACT is,Bireli and Sylvain, and countless other european gypsy players KICK his fuckin ass BIG time.In every area-lines,speed,feeling,artic
ulation,execution,energy,etc.. Sorry for offending the shrine that you venerate.Let me guess, you also worship the likes of Kurt Rosenwinkle? -
@loksinsan writing those lines you seem like being an even greater amateur, fucking tard!
-
lets hope pat metheny never sees this shitty recording posted on youtube.

I hate to sound critical, because Pat is an awesome player, and he can kick ass when he wants to. .No doubt about that. However, his solo chordal playing sounds kind of lame and more academic than anything else.Solo playing is an art in and of itself.Very few modern guitar players can pull it off with the same exquisiteness as people like Barney Kessel,Joe Pass and Johnny Smith. The only modern players that i feel do it justice, are gypsy guys like bireli, sylvain luc and others
-
wish there were more videos like this were he plays solo.
-
If you guys want to hear a really kick ass version of this tune, check out bireli lagrene and Sylvain Luc performing it live at marciac 2000..Those guys make every other jazz player, including, pat metheny, seem like an amateur
-
pitty the sound is distorted

@fretbuzz i know he can play in time, i am familiar with his work but he's not doing so with this clip due to the reasons you mentioned, i.e making it up as he goes along and it being an experiment in reharmonisation. I am a jazz player, obviously not of the calibre of pat but i do understand the methods being applied. Although it does show pats mastery of theory and harmony, it just leaves me cold, which is just a personal opinion.Anyway pats awsome, i dig his work, no harm intended. Peace : )
what a bunch of weird ass comments on this vid...

Pat is obviously demonstrating a concept here. If you have any doubts about his solo playing, you haven't heard "One Quiet Night."
