@meltzerboy Yes, Sutherland sang Giorgetta on July 16th and 18th 1952. Those two staged performances were her "finishing project" with the Royal College og Music, and it was seeing her perform on this occassion that finally convinced the administration at Covent Garden, for whom she had already auditioned several times, that they should sign her up.
First of all, I love this little Puccini shocker. And second, Julia Varady is an excellent singer, not well enough known today. Thanks to cantorandopera for sending and to Onegin65 for posting!
She is ROMANIAN, born in ORADEA (a town in the north of Romania). She studied with Romanian professors in the Music Unicersity of Cluj - town in north-west of Romania) and then in the Music University of Bucharest (the Capital of Romania), with great Romanian soprano ARTA FLORESCU. The Romanian singing school has a tradition in bel canto style and gave many outstanding names, like Hariclea Darclee, Vriginia Zeani, Nicolae Herlea, Niculina Carstea, Ileana Cotrubas, Angela Gheorghiu!
Cardinall, I agree with you that nationality plays very little in talent. I just always thought of her as being Romanian, but I see that I was misinformed. Regardless, she was/is amazing and we are all very lucky to have her artistry documented so well!
@mikebench Julia's last name is Hungarian. If you Google Julia's biography you will see that she is of Hungarian ancestry. Does it really matter? She is great singer regardless of her nationality.
