~You Can~ Ep.123; Mother's Grief

After his first gulp of the hard liquor the flight attendant gave him, Nick tried not to chug the drink down. His eyes slid closed and he took a long even breath through his nose to clear his head so he wouldn't raise his voice or cause a scene.


"Y-you what?" He cleared his throat and shifted in his seat so his hip was against the side closest to Miley, his crotch angled away from her. "Why would you decide that and-?"


"I didn't decide it, Nick. I was just simply thinking about it." She correct him. "Im not going to make yo-"


"Good, cause its not going to happen." He turned his head away from her to look out of the window beside him.


Miley tried to apologize for ever bringing it up, but it was out there floating between them now. She wasn't able to grab it and take it back.


Her suggestion was devastating to him. She wanted to drop a nuclear bomb on his home land. His pride. So he wouldn't be able to distribute anymore soldiers, and they would be taken away from him, used for only God knows what. Probably experimented on and they would never be at their full glory again and neither would he, he figured.


Even though he would look like one, he wouldn't feel like the same man again -- if even a man at all.


And they just got each other back so they haven't been able to discuss one vital subject yet. . . Family expansion. His gaze moved back over to her. Since she was thinking about this, it was clear what she wasn't thinking. It stung at his heart a little and caused his throat to dry more. He took another swig of his drink.


He looked around and no one seemed interest in what they were doing or saying, but he still kept his voice low so the currant subject was just between the two of them and asked, "Why would you want to do that to me anyway?" Though he was pretty sure he already knew the answer.


Their eyes met again, Nick saw some worry swimming deep in her beautiful blue crystal orbs. It sped up his heart a bit.


She sighed before speaking. "Well. . . for starters, it's a lot easier and quicker for you to get a vasectomy than for me to fixed. For me, I would have to be put under and I would have a longer recovery than you."


"But we're still young, Miley. We aren't even thirty yet, for crying out loud. Don't you think it's a bit extreme to be considering this, maybe?" On the outside he was doing his best to look calm as can be, but mentally he was running around screaming, ready to get down on his knees to beg to save his livelihood. "Why can't we just keep using condoms? Or maybe you should get on birth control if you are so worried about it." His gaze switched back over to her.


"Because those things can be forgotten. . ." It had happened before, more than once. First time resulted in the pain of Libby, the second was a just a scare. She knew sooner or later they were going to run out of luck. "I would really like for you to do this for me, Nick. I wouldn't think of you as any less of a man." The look in her eyes -- Nick had to look away or else he would have caved and hung his pride.


"I can't believe you want to kill Mr. Horny Toad. Maybe I want more kids Miles. You might not but did you ever think about asking if I did? Did you ever think of that?" His voice was becoming a harsh whisper and it rose an octave. He looked around to make sure no one heard. No one was looking.


"If done right, it can be reversed and I think that they could freeze some and store it away someplace."


Nick snorted. "If done right. . . I would hate to see what happens if it's done wrong." He shook his head and then he noticed there was more worry than there was persuasion in her eyes. There was more to this. "Why do this, Miley? What the real reason?"


Miley looked down at her lap and brought her hands into it, fiddling with her fingertips, flicking her nails together. Nick grabbed a hold of her hand and she shut her eyes before explaining. "I lost Frankie. I lost Libby. Amongst that, I lost parts of myself. And I almost lost Niles when he was being born. . . And he has a disease that could kill him just by eating sugar." She paused and looked at him. "Maybe. . . Maybe I shouldn't try to have another child, Nick. I'm scared to even think about it." Her eyes ablaze with truth. "I don't really think it's a good idea."


A mother's grief never fully goes away.
