Hydlide 3 - Dragon!!

Hydlide 3 for the MSX2. This is another game I purchased from WOOMB and I really do love it. Graphics are good and soundtrack is pure awesomeness. The original japanese rom features a english option, but the guys at WOOMB retranslated the whole game. So now NPCs have more to say. Instead of hearing "What?" they'll say "What are you talking about?"

There's a bit of strategy and planning involved as you play. The game mechanics add a certian realism to the mix, so you need to be conscious certain things like time of day and your of weight. Your character will get sleepy & hungery, and if you don't treat those desires you'll get weaker. Visit the inn during the night for sleep and eat "Food" when your character becomes hungry.

In this game, you must carry only what you need to survive. There's no point in hording items or money even if you want to keep it until you reach the next store. There's 2 parts to the weight feature: Max weight and Master weight. Your Max weight is your total carrying capacity and if you go over that you'll be encumbered. The Master weight specifies a weight limit for any equipable weapon before a penalty occurs. All this means is your strength will drop when you equip a weapon heavier than your Master weight.

The weight feature is a drag in beginning of the game. If you choose a fighter class you'll immediatle realize that you have to stay naked for the first couple levels because your Max weight won't allow you to equip any armor. Not to mention your only choice of weapons are a dagger or club, when you really want a short sword or little bow that are also available. Things do get better as your levelup, you carry heavier items and equip better weapons & armor. The weight feature is such a big part of the experience that I think it's the reason people dismiss it at first glance. This great game and I can't wait to finish it.

You can only hit a head that's firing at you, right? And the order seems random, so I think you are guessing which one fires next.

Yup, you have to fire the arrows into the dragon's mouth as it attacks, and it must be from the front. And yeah, the dragon's attack pattern is completely random. I usually tend to stay with the left most Dragon head since it tends to attack more often.

That dragon was one big mofo.

They really should have halved the dragon's HP tho. If boss simple as that takes 5 minutes to beat, it's not fun but fustrating.

Awesome game, I need my MSX2 back... anyway, this is why i am so mad on the videogame producers nowadays... such great games like hydlide or ys or dragon slayer arent produced anymore... this makes me sad.

Hmm, the commentary on this video is very interesting. Most gamers have this expectation that you should be able to lug around tons of crap on your back all the time, but try running around with even 20 pounds on your back for a while and you'll tire more easily (not to mention be more clumsy).

This doesn't look too bad. I don't really like Hylide on the NES or the Genesis, but this looks decent.

Played the MSX1 version through in monochrome (monitor...).

looks pretty cool on MSX2 in colour even today imho though.

Anyway... first RPG I ever (wanted to be) completed and I seriously still dig those PSG tunes here.
