1GOAL Campaign: Education for All

United Nations, New York, October 2009 - Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, is announcing in a video message his support for the 2010 FIFA World Cup 1GOAL: Education for All campaign.

This is the text of his message:

"2010 will mark ten years since the world pledged to provide primary education to every child.

Under the Education for All Campaign, we have made great progress toward achieving the Millennium Development Goal for education. More than 40 million additional children are now in school.

But we cannot rest until every child receives a primary education. More than 75 million children in the worlds poorest countries are not enrolled in school. The majority are girls. Many more are forced to drop out without finishing their studies.

Together, we can change this.

Just over a year ago, I came together with global leaders to launch the Class of 2015. We pledged that every child would receive an education by then.

To fulfil our promise, we need more aid for education, better training for teachers, and programmes such as school meals to help children stay in school. We need to deliver on the commitments that have already been made.

Today, I am pleased to sign on with FIFA and football players everywhere in the 1Goal Campaign. Next year, the World Cup will come to Africa. Lets ensure it leaves a legacy of education.

I call on world leaders and people everywhere to join me in signing on to the 1Goal Campaign. With your support, the most important goals scored at the 2010 World Cup will be the Millennium Development Goals!"
