Still ist die Nacht, es ruhen die Gassen,
In diesem Hause wohnte mein Schatz;
Sie hat schon längst die Stadt verlassen,
Doch steht noch das Haus auf demselben Platz.
Da steht auch ein Mensch und starrt in die Höhe
Und ringt die Hände vor Schmerzensgewalt;
Mir graust es, wenn ich sein Antlitz sehe -
Der Mond zeigt mir meine eigne Gestalt.
Du Doppelgänger, du bleicher Geselle!
Was äffst du nach mein Liebesleid,
Das mich gequält auf dieser Stelle
So manche Nacht, in alter Zeit?
@malcolminthemiddle89 Sometimes I think the comments here can be so off. To say a pronouciation that is near perfect is horrible is truly a bit weak in the brain. If anybody sang German Lied with a clear prounciation, it was Marian Anderson. I speak fluent German and have lived in Germany many years and I say nothing is wrong with her diction. You understand every word. What more can you desire.

Very nice. This is usually for a low voice man to sing. But Ms. Anderson gives an equally mysterious and chilling rendition. Brava!

I hadn't heard Kipnis' rendition for about thirty years. Hearing it again recently -- and having had three more decades of listening, understanding and maturing, the better to judge it by:) -- I add it to my list without reservation --

her pronounciation is horrible. apart from very nice, very chilling. the dynamics on the fff parts could be a little stronger.
and the translation by qwertyman3210123 is not entirely correct. the doppelgänger does not just stare up into space, "in die höhe" just means "up" so it´s more like he´s looking at the house itself, maybe at the window where his beloved has had her room

Great performance, love the song and I couldn't do better but the way she does the ver Schmerzensgewalt kills me...lol
Any one else hear a whine on the 'gewalt', granted I'm not a professional can't say it is correct or not but I AM qualified enough to say that its like nails on a chalk board for me.
I can overlook other pronunciation and mistakes but that one killed me...lol

CHILLING. The only versions I've heard in the same league are those by Jerome Hines and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau --

Wonderful contrast between apprehension and passion and between vulnerability and power. This is a very tense performance. Thank you very much for sharing this.
