So, so true. That still matters to some of us...or, I'd argue, to anybody who actually knows what a "golfer" and a "champion" are.

"this guy is a freak, to be 60 and still competing and keepin' up with the young bucks!"
No accident. First, he's always been in unbelievable shape, and he was a very good multisport athlete when he was a kid (and probably still is). Second, his swing--in a way hardly anybody notices, for some reason--is (mostly) tuned to what the body is made to do in the swinging of a golf club, and in a way that transfers maximum energy into the ball efficiently.

There's another one on YT where he's picking it clean, shot after shot, hitting not quite DTL but slightly to the left, between a couple of trees (under "Tom Watson Golf Swing"). Same thing there. No gouge, just barely brushing. Off a good lie, you can do that. With him, it indicates a swing path and plane that brings the clubhead into the back of the ball at a shallow angle, toe gradually releasing over heel, rather than a steep path dissipating the force down into the ground.

...BUT, I'm not disputing your praise of Watson. The guy is amazing. I saw him play when he was in his 40s (up close, I mean), and he hit it better then--much better--than he did when he was 25. If he had putted in his 40s like he did in his 20s, you'd have seen a string of domination like you've seen with Tiger in his generation.

Hogan and Snead weren't too bad. Neither was Nicklaus. I know 1P theorists claim Hogan and sometimes Snead for their own, but they're not. Hogan was up to a point, if he didn't make an absolutely full swing (usually only with fairway woods and a driver), but if you define 1P strictly as somebody whose arm plane at the top (itself defined as the left arm at or near perpendicular to the ground) in a full swing is in line with the shoulder joints, even he wasn't.
-
Depends on the lie, but he'll usually pick it if he's in good form and the lie is excellent.

My idol, a true master of the sport.

greatest two planer ball striker of all time

I used to swing like that when I started playing golf in 1978.....I used to watch Nicklaus then Watson and copied what they did, and it felt natural to me....I was really long and got comments from others about my flexibility .I then started reading about golf and tried to build a "proper: swing....followed Hogan and later Faldo...tried to get into positions etc...went from low 80's and 70's at times to avg high 80's, stopped listening to teachers and started playing like this again back to 70's
