Here you can see the 3 possible colors of Rough collies. In America I think a pure white color is also accepted. The colors can vary a bit, for example the sable color can be from pale yellow to a dark mahogany.

  • There's a white version too with all three of the others colours and characteristics. Where's it. They're fuckin' useless as pastoral dogs anyway, no instinct left. Great pets though. ;)

  • The white version is not accepted in Europe, I think I´m right.

I agree that they are wonderful pets but I´ve heard they are quite useless as pastoral dogs.

  • Yes you guessed it right. This is Steadwyn Sacred Blues (Cooper), an old Blue Merle from Steadwyn.

  • @101truthhurts well, my rough collie herds people to food kernels, so I can vouch for the fact the hearding instinct is not gone

  • I've had sable, tri and white collies. My last two collies have been white "without any health issues whatsoever". One would bode well to secure any collie from a reliable breeder regardless of color. I must confess my current 100% white with two blue eyes is a show stopper, the most loving I've ever had. Is it any wonder he's AKC name reads "Spirit of Hearts"

All my collie's without regard to color live through the Spirit of his heart!

  • I have a sable collie. Earlier I preferred the tricolor to other colors but now I think the most beautiful color in collies is a dark sable. My dog isn't that dark.

I also prefer irish spotting to the white collies bred in America. Here in Finland too much white is not accepted.

As far as the heads of the white collies are colored and the colored spots cover their eyes and ears reduces the risk of being deaf. Deafness has some connection to if there was pigmentation inside of the ear.

  • sabel or blue merel

  • Sable

  • i love the sable

  • @spiritwind82 Good for you. Sable merles kick-ass. Technically, the standard allows for sable merles. They are discriminated against improperly by judges!

  • Sable Merle is the best of both worlds - the mystic beauty of a Merle with the traditional "Lassic" sable color.

I got my collie "Prague" from Ka-zes collies in Wisconsin, and was allowed to have her because she was a sable merle. Judges (improperly) discriminate against sable merles, so they decided not to show her. I thank God every day that I was allowed the pure honor to live my life with Prague. The best collie I have ever had the joy of owning.

  • I read somewhere among the comments that the first blue merle dog was Steadwyn's "Cooper". I used to help out at that kennel many years ago and I thought I recognized him :)

  • Hey! A collie is a collie and it just doesn't get any better than that! But, if somone put a gun to my head I'd have to vote for the tri. In my lifetime, I've had two tricoloreds (Middie and Megan) and two sables (Laddie and Corilane Bradshaw). LOVED them all!
