Dr. Ari Brown discusses various breast feeding positions with Lactation Consultant Linda Hill.
There are 4 common positions. The "cradle" which is the most common and is fairly comfortable for older babies. The "cross-cradle" is more for newborns and allows the mother to give more head support before moving into a cradle position. The Dad's favorite named position, "football," is useful for Moms who've had C-sections or maybe twins and allows for more space in front while the baby is tucked over to the side. The last position is the "side lying" position which allows for greater comfort for both Mom and baby lying down on a bed.

Dads can help new Moms with gentle suggestions on positions, particularly if one position seems to be causing some discomfort or troubles with feeding.

  • various couples who feel that we are inhibiting the intellectual and physical growth of our children by bottle feeding them. It has gotten to the point where my wife doesnt even like to tell people that we bottle feed and i have had to defend our position more than once. I have always felt that there are advantages to both sides of the debate and would like to get your opinion on it as well. Thanks for your time and for the continued videos i look forward to your next one.

  • @moshpitmachine Thanks for the comment and I get the criticism you must feel. Bottle feeding does provide great opportunities for Dads to bond over feeding -- a plus. I don't think that bottle feeing is harmful from a health and nutrition standpoint, and there is no shame in it. It's a good option. I believe that there are demonstrated health benefits to BFing, and it is certainly cheaper! That's why we chose that path. But I am no lactivist.

  • my youngest has been on the bottle since she was born and has also been hitting or exceeding all of her milestones. She has also remained in the top 50th percentile for height and weight and is very healthy as well. Me and my wife chose bottle feeding because i believe that it is a helpful way to form bonds to both parents. I know there are many pumps out there but that is also something my wife is not comfortable with. The only reason i ask your opinion is because we catch a lot of flak from

  • As fathers i would like to know your actual position on breast feeding. I have two children one age 2 and the other 6 months and me and my wife decided that it would be better to bottle feed. over the last two years we have seen no negative side effects from this as our oldest is in the top 75 percentile for height and weight and has met or exceeded all of his milestones. We also have not been in the hospital save for one panic moment in the first month that turned out to be nothing.
