Iris, Hank and Tommy, Halloween 1992

Iris and Hank go to visit Tommy at the hospital on Halloween night, and both adults are a little worried about how Tommy will take the news that he's too weak to go out trick-or-treating, since Tommy has always loved Halloween, and Iris promised to take him out. Hank is momentarily angry when he learns that Iris arranged for him to have the night off work to be with Tommy, but immediately after blowing up at her, he apologizes. Iris and Hank are the ones in for a surprise, though, when they find Tommy in his room, dressed as a surgeon, telling a ghost story to another little boy. Tommy introduces the boy as Mark, and tells his dad and Iris that it's Mark's first week in the hospital, so Tommy wants to stick around the hospital and tell ghost stories to Mark instead of going out trick-or-treating. Iris and Hank leave the candy they brought with the boys and leave when Tommy says that his story is more effective if he and Mark are alone. In the hallway, Iris wonders if Tommy's performance was for Mark's benefit, or for her and Hank's. Hank thinks it's both. Iris is moved to tears at the fact that Tommy knew he was too sick to go out tonight but he wanted to save her and Hank the pain of disappointing him. Hank says when he first got married, he didn't want to have kids, but when Tommy got sick, he wondered why he brought him into the world; to suffer? Iris replies that Tommy is there to teach them a lesson. Hank knows that he's learned more from his son than from anyone else in his life. Iris says Tommy is incredible; he's the one giving them strength. Iris and Hank embrace, but then Iris pulls back and walks away. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.
