Execution Cell At Bodmin Jail

The last hanging at Bodmin Jail was in 1909 (this was also the last public hanging in Cornwall).
This display respectfully re-creates the execution cell at the jail.

The last PUBLIC hanging in the UK was of Micheal Barrett outside Newgate prison London in 1868. After then ALL executions were in private, either in a purpose built shed such as this one, or in a specially built cell next to the condemned cell inside the prison itself. Members of the press were invited only at the County Sherrifs discretion but this stopped in 1921.

we ´hangmans noose´was not used in the UK in its place was a brass eyelet spliced into the end of the rope with the other end threaded thought it making a running loop. It was found to tighten quicker, be far less likely to jam and the brass eye let placed under the condemned´s left ear did a far better job of breaking his/her neck than a tied noose.
