@SonarRed i do agree that changes could mess up the concept.. this song is a masterpiece, written in a variety of symbols, each of them describing a lot. if one symbol is disturbed, it will reflect to much of the story. If mr. cohen signed the letter personally, it means a lot.. and should be respected.

@SonarRed covering a letter may be contextually odd, but at least it can be called unadulterated..and i'm not certain it is so odd..the narration of verse in the first person is common enough, even in songs, whats odd is it being signed I suppose.Cohen may have approved the change I guess,still..what bothers me is hearing Cohens version many times and walking away from it with no reason to believe that friendship is a theme, and then this..a casual throwaway reference that can't be true.

@lites26 thats probably subjective my friend, seems perfectly done to me.. but then again, thats my subjective opinion :)

Joan is by far the best of all vocalists, her range is awesome, one of my fave's . I've been a fan for 40 years.

@issofunky its only a fkin song...who cares if a male or female sings it........this is a great version and am sure mr coohen would agree
I can understand lyrics being changed occasionally to suit the singers identity or a new genre that the song has been translated to...but to end this song "sincerely, a friend" seems to screw with all the previous lyrics...the original ending was "sincerely, L.cohen" . I can understand why joan didn't sing that...but "a friend" is in conflict with the rest of the song...its a lazy lyric change that messes everything up..would the writer of the letter really say "a friend"? and why?

@northman01 @stefandetrez The poetic integrity isn't ruined by changing that line, as one can't quite cover a personal letter without it being contextually odd in it's own right. For a fact, this change goes back to covers by Jennifer Warnes and others, back in the 70's and 80's. Listen to Jennifer Warnes cover from 1987 to get an idea of the similar changes.
